CHISWICK OSTEOPATHIC CLINIC Carlo Constandinou and Katie Hunter

Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy

Osteopaths are skilled in diagnosing problems in the musculoskeletal system (bones, spine, joints etc) but more than that we are able to recognise when other conditions have developed from these problems.

The central principle of osteopathy is that structure governs function, which means that if something is out of place or out of balance it will not work properly. This applies especially clearly to the neuromusculoskeletal system.

The musculoskeletal system not only holds you up but provides support and protection to the nerves, blood vessels and organs. It is well known that musculoskeletal problems can cause pain, what is not always appreciated is that they can also lead to impaired organ function.

We use a variety of osteopathic techniques in the clinic - from traditional manipulation and mobilisation to stretching and massage. Our particular specialism is cranial osteopathy. All treatment starts with a detailed case history followed by a physical examination after which we can make a diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan.

Cranial osteopathy has the same aims and objectives as all osteopathic treatment. It is only the methods which are quite different. Rather than applying an obvious outside force, and gauging the reaction, in cranial osteopathy, we listen with our hands. We use the term ‘listen’ because it is a particular type of quiet attention that allows some of the deep stresses and strains to come to the surface. That may sound quite peculiar - but as long as you are alive the body is a hive of motion, constantly repairing and reorganising!

Trauma of any sort, physical or even emotional, causes changes in the movement pattern of the body, sometimes very subtly. Cranial osteopathy allows us to detect and treat these changes.
